Using a shampoo

You apply shampoo to your scalp, where build-up often occurs. Massage your scalp well with your fingers or use a massage brush. While rinsing, the shampoo will clean the rest of your hair.

Using a conditioner

Apply conditioner to the ends, working upwards but making sure you avoid the scalp. While the conditioner is working in, you can comb through your curls with a coarse brush / comb so that the tangles disappear easily.

Using a co-wash

A co-wash is a shampoo and conditioner in 1. You can apply it to the entire hair and scalp. Make sure to remove any tangles with a coarse brush or comb while soaking in.

Using a mask

You can use a mask without using a shampoo (if you do not experience build-up) or use it after a (clarifying) shampoo. Apply the mask to your curls and not to your scalp. A mask nourishes your curls and should be left on for at least 15-30 minutes. While retracting, you can use a coarse brush to remove the tangles.

Using a leave-in

You use a leave-in after washing and before applying styling products such as a gel or foam. A leave-in gives extra nourishment to your curls, use little if you have thin and little hair, because it can be aggravating. Use more if you have much and thicker hair. Do not rinse the leave-in.

Using a gel

A gel ensures that you get more defined curls. It can also make your curls hard (cast), which you squeeze out when your curls are completely dry. Use the gel on damp or wet hair. Of course, you should test for yourself what your curls do best on, damp or soaking wet hair.

Use of a mousse/foam

You can use a mousse/foam alone or together with a gel. This can give more volume to your curls. Apply it to damp or soaking wet hair. A mouse can also be used as a refresher on day 2 or 3. Mist your hair slightly damp, apply the foam and let it dry.

Use of a hydrophilic/microfiber

With a microfiber towel you can fluff your curls without causing frizz. You can also use the towel to squeeze out excess water/product to get nice defined curls before letting it dry.

Using a Denman D12

If you find a brush too much hassle, this brush is a super easy way to get defined curls. The advantage is that with this comb you can grab a larger piece of hair to comb through. Because the teeth of this comb are close together, you get many thin clumps and this provides definition and volume.

Squish to condish is a method to deeply moisturize your hair while conditioning it.

This is done by applying a generous amount of conditioner to dripping wet hair and then scrunching it into your curls to promote deeper penetration of your favorite conditioner.

Squish to Condish with leave-in and curl cream, wavy hair

Squish to condish is a method to deeply hydrate your hair with your conditioner. This variant shows how to do this with a leave-in and curl cream. This way you ensure that all hair gets enough nutrition and it does not cause sagging curls, which can sometimes be the case with wavy curls with a leave-in conditioner.
